Global affairs are the complex interactions and relationships among states, organizations, and individuals on a worldwide scale. They encompass issues like diplomacy, world trade, international security, and human rights. The study of global affairs demands fluency in the approaches and frameworks from multiple disciplines across the social sciences and humanities and an ability to bridge scholarship and practice.

The emergence of numerous new nations in the wake of decolonization transformed global politics, giving rise to the United Nations and other international organizations that enhanced global governance and cooperation. The establishment of these institutions enabled newly independent states to gain recognition and legitimacy on the world stage, while fostering dialogue and collaboration in key areas such as economic development and human rights. In addition, they influenced Cold War dynamics as these countries sought to align themselves with the United States or Soviet Union for support and recognition.
The major in global affairs includes the requirement that you take a modern language course designated L4. If you are planning on applying to this major, we encourage you to begin working toward the L4 language requirement early. Courses taken at another institution or during a summer or term-time study abroad program may count as global affairs credit with DUS approval.
