World news is a category of news reports covering international events that are not necessarily related to the domestic political issues and activities of a particular country. This news may include reporting on wars, conflicts and other issues affecting the citizens of a particular nation. It also includes reporting on the actions of international bodies such as multilateral organizations, or the summits of their member states. It is often a subfield of journalism that requires the reporter to travel abroad and cover stories from various locales, or, in the case of some journalists, to go out into the field with no permanent contract with any specific media outlet. Such reporters are known as stringers, and they produce news articles for a number of different outlets at once.
During the show, anchors check in with local ABC affiliate news producers to see what they are working on for their nightly local newscasts; the show has also sometimes broadcast the opening of an affiliate’s local newscast during breaking news (for example, during a snowstorm a station in Buffalo would air the first few minutes of that evening’s newscast from WKBW-TV). A feature segment called Morning Papers ran for years, wherein the anchors would read off offbeat or humorous stories found in various newspapers from around the world. The show has also run a variety of other segments, such as a daily celebrity interview and an interactive viewer email program.
World News Now is the primary overnight news program for network-owned ABC affiliates in the United States. The program is aired live from 2:00 to 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time, and is also tape delayed for many other ABC stations. Until September 2011, three Citadel Communications-owned ABC affiliates, KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa; KLKN-TV in Lincoln, Nebraska and WOI-DT in Ames, Iowa pre-empted the program (along with Good Morning America First Look) due to their commitment to fulfill existing syndicated programming contracts for the same time period.
